‘Pacific Rim’ creates its own language and its own mythology, and the result is one gloriously entertaining vision that leaves us in wide-eyed wonder. Monster mayhem like that should captivate legions of moviegoers who once sat riveted in front of TV sets watching ‘Ultraman,’ ‘Rodan’ and even ‘Godzilla vs. Later on in Hong Kong, a humongous robot uses an ocean liner as club to bash a monster, in one of the best and most tightly choreographed fight scenes. His futuristic fight club pitting robots against monsters is this summer’s biggest surprise and ultimate thrill ride. That’s right, skeptics, Guillermo del Toro, the fan boy fave who gave us the classic ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ and the spirited ‘Hellboy’ movies, has done it again. In a supremely adolescent way, ‘Pacific Rim’ unshackles the geeky kid inside all of us so he can stomp around for a couple hours like Godzilla on a miniature city. The concept to Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Godzilla’-sized film is about as simple as it gets, but actually constructing such mammoth creations is a far more arduous undertaking.
